Popular Long Island HS Teacher/Coach Dies At 42 After Battling Cancer The Sachem community is mourning the loss of Matt "Dezy" DiStefano, a Sachem High School North teacher and popular volleyball coach, who died from kidney cancer. DiStefano, of Ronkonkoma, died Monday, Jan. 27, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. He was 42. Known as a great motivational speaker who never gave up, DiStefano was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic kidney cancer in February 2019. Phone Scammers On Rise Again, CT State Police Say Connecticut State Police are warning residents to beware of phone scams that appear to be on the rise. Dispatchers and troopers from around the state have been contacted by concerned citizens about unusual phone calls they have received, the department said. One In Custody After Downtown Stabbing In Area A 25-year-old area man is under arrest after he allegedly stabbed another man. Devin C. Smith, of New Paltz, was arrested around 10:20 p.m., Friday, Jan. 24, and charged with one count of felony assault, said Lt. Robert Lucchesi of the New Paltz Police Department. According to Lucchesi, police responded to the area of Main and North Front streets for a reported stabbing. Once on the scene, they found Smith, who was being detained by bystanders.
