Spring Valley Man Sentenced To 12 Years For Sexual Abuse Of Child A Spring Valley man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for sexual abuse against a child. Luis Miguel Lopez-Ruiz, 35, was also sentenced to 20 years post-release supervision after pleading guilty, said Acting Rockland County District Attorney Kevin Gilleece, According to the District Attorney's Office, between October 2014 and December 2018, Lopez-Ruiz had sex with a child starting when the victim was less than 13-years-old. Man Pretending To Be Village Employee Enters Homes In Nassau County, Police Say A 33-year-old man who allegedly pretended to be a village employee and faked his way into two homes has been arrested for burglary and other charges, according to police. Jonathan Guzman was arrested around 11:50 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28, after Nassau County Police received notice that a man matching Guzman's description was entering home pretending to need to check gas and electric meters in the Russell Gardens area of Great Neck. Man Charged In Stabbing Death Of Woman In Bethel A Bethel man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a woman to death at an area home. David MacDowell, 34, was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 24, after coming to the Bethel Police Department minutes after police had responded to a home on Plumtrees Road and discovered the woman suffering from several stab wounds, Bethel Police said. The unidentified woman was transported to Danbury Hospital where she died from her wounds, the department said. MacDowell was charged with manslaughter, pending a further investigation, police said. Video: Shark Caught Off Long Island Sound A man out for a little nighttime fishing on the Long Island Sound hooked a brown shark instead. Fisherman John Skinner, of Greenport, was fishing Saturday, Aug. 24, in Southold for bluefish when he hooked a large brown shark up against some rocks. A YouTube video shows the shark and the entire 20 minute battle with the fish. Because the brown shark is prohibited in New York, he immediately released it. Area Home Built In 1795 Heavily Damaged By Fire A LaGrange home built in 1795 received heavy damage following a fire on the second floor and the left side of the home, the LaGrange Fire Department said. The fire started around 10:40 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 15 Skidmore Road, said LaGrange Fire Chief Barry Ward. Arriving units found heavy fire on the second floor of the left side of the home, he added. Area Man Convicted Of Attempted Rape In Case Connected With Sting Of Online Predators A 35-year-old man has been convicted by a jury of attempted rape in a case connected with a sting operation of online predators. Travis Sammeth of Newburgh was convicted Thursday, Aug. 22, by an Ulster County jury, said the Ulster County District Attorney's Office. Musician Performing In Norwalk Dies On Stage An area musician and lifelong Norwalker Timothy Paul Currie died suddenly while on stage performing with his band on the Norwalk Green on Saturday, Aug. 24. Currie, 66, was well known for playing drums with the Tim Currie Motown Band and Tim Currie’s Tumblin’ Dice Band, which is a 60’s tribute band.
